Of a Man who slaughtered a Chick
As we walked in to the compound to know the cause of the loud screams that we had heard from far and wide,we found people scattered all over the compound talking in whispers. The mood in that typical African homestead was sombre and would have confused the Devil and make him flee. Women seemed more moved by whatever it was that had happenned. In the falling dusk, from a far,one could tell that all was not well in that compund.
John Havoc was well known in Thungururu village for his generosity and his piety. He was short of words,a man who could seemingly not hurt the smallest of insects that tread on this world. When he spoke, both men and women, boys and girls, paid heed to his words and longed to fetch a thing or two from his well of wisdom. He was a man anyone could hardly disregard.
John had a good taste when it came to women. When he was chosing his partner for the 'rest' of his life,he made sure that he went for the best in the village.Alide, who would later become Mrs John left most men of her age drooling for her love. Many had tried their shots but all had hit Alide's hard rock of a heart. Some, like Tupendane, had done the unthinkable to try and see whether they could be noticed by the village queen,Alide.
Tupendane had one day, in his quest for Alide's love brought the members of the church he attended to Alide's home claiming that they were there because God had 'revealed' to one of them that Alide had a dark spirit that kept on following her wherever she went.Terrified, she and her parents joined the group of worshippers in condemning and rebuking the said spirit. After a serious session of exorcism and falling in trance and all the drama that involves such an activity,Alide's parents called the pastor in to seclusion and inquired about the spirits that were following their daughter. It was then that the pastor told them, "One of my congregants,Tupendane, saw in a dream that Alide has a spirit that leads her to rejecting Him.That is why we came to pray for her".
That was one of the many sorry situations Alide would go through before she finally met her love Jonh. Many wondered how he came to win her heart but it is well known in this world that, even the worst of killers, the meanest of people and the hardest to get of ladies have a soft part of their heart that only a special person like John Havoc and the rest can be able to touch. Many assume though that John's eloquence and good choice of words when speaking did all the talking.
Never before in Thungururu village had the folks witnessed a wedding close to John and Alide's in terms of elegance, beauty and the horde of people that came to witness that their friends John and Alide had tied the knot. Many had however, especially the young men who had loved Alide with all their hearts, come to witness that another man had outsmarted them and that she was gone forever.Traditional dances attracted both the young and old.Young men shrieked and jumped as high as their feet could throw them and the girls ullulated as loud as their voices could permit. It was a scene many could never forget.Food had been cooked by the expert cooks in the village and the traditional brewers had brewed the best liqour. The people therefore danced, ate and drank to their fill.
Mr and Mrs John lead a happy and quiet life that left many women-especially those who were battered daily by their drunk husbands- wishing and hoping they were in Alide's shoes. When Alide gave birth to their first child, four ullulations were heard from women and the mid-wives signalling that a baby girl had been born. When Alide held her daughter in her hands, she shed tears.Tears of joy and not of pain she had gone through while giving birth. It was then that she vowed to protect her daughter with everything it would take her, even life itself.
In school,John's daughter became the best in almost every subject. She caught the eye of many teachers and amazed her fellow pupils with her brilliance.
It was during that fateful day when Alide had left her daughter home with her husband John that a man known to many as harmless became harmful.John entered the room the daughter had been sleeping and covered her mouth. She tried to scream but all was in vain. She tried to throw her small legs and hands but the father was determined. Her blows and kicks were like the kicks of a chick in the claws of a hawk, futile. When he was done,he told her,"Don't tell your mom" In her young and tender age,the young daughter was made a woman. A wife. Worst of all by a person she trusted most and loved in equal measure. Her Dad!
When Alide came back, her daughter ran to her, clung to her long skirt as if it was the safest place on earth she had ever been.Tears flowed from her small and beautiful eyes. She told her the ordeal her father had put her through. In disbelief,Alide started screaming and in no time hundreds of villagers had gathered in her homestead. She told them how her man,who had promised to love her for the rest of his life had slaughtered a harmless and meatless chick.A chick that had no aroma when cooking.A chick that kicked in pain as it was slaughtered. Her Man!
Angry at these news, the villagers, especially those who had been rejected by Alide in her hay days knew it was time to take revenge on the man who deprived them of their joy.John who had all the while been hiding in his hut, knew not that his time had come.Energetic men charged forward and on a count of three, the door was blown wide open by their legs.Up they brought John out and on that very compound that they danced, ate and drank on his wedding day, beat him to death.
What an impious and shameful way to die.
